If you’re struggling to scoop up those backhand ground balls without missing the baseball or causing an error, then this backhand drill is for you!

Do This Infield Drill By Yourself

The best part about this backhand drill is that you can do it by yourself. You don’t need a glove. You don’t need a partner. You don’t need a coach. All you need is a baseball and some good ole fashioned work ethic.

Work On Soft Hands With This Fielding Drill

When you’re doing this fielding drill, make sure you are working on having soft hands. You don’t want to stab at the baseball and have hard hands. Imagine you are catching an egg. Be soft, fluid, and go through the baseball without going too far. Also make sure your wrist angle isn’t crooked through the catch.

Keep Your Butt Down

Make sure you are staying low when you’re doing this backhand drill. I see too many players start to get taller and taller and straighten their legs when performing this infield drill. So really focus on staying down with your fielding hand close to the ground, chest over toes, and butt down.

Practice This Backhand Drill

This backhand drill will only help you if you practice it. Don’t just watch the video above and say “Oh that’s cool” and then do nothing about it. Practice it! Come up with a plan on how to implement it into your infield training sessions. Maybe plan to do this backhand drill 3-4 times a week and 3 sets of 20-30 catches. That would be a good place to start if you want to be better at fielding backhand ground balls.
