How To Grip and Throw a Gyroball
How To Grip and Throw a Gyroball
How To Throw a Gyro Ball - So I've done some studying of my own on this pitch and have figured out how it is thrown. It is actually pretty simple to understand but mastering its movement is tough. This pitch to me is pretty much like a back up slider. You actually want to throw it the same way as a slider except for the tilt on the baseball. You want the axis of the baseball to spin with all 4 seams down and arm side. First grip the baseball the same as a slider. Take your middle finger and pointer together on the bottom lace of the open end of the horseshoe. The thumb goes under the pointer but can creep a little bit outside of the pointer finger if it feels comfortable. There should be a little space between the baseball and your palm. To throw the gyro ball you will think fastball all the way through your delivery. Just before the release point you will turn your fingers to the side of the ball to while using your thumb to help with this turning process. This should be like you are turning a door knob. You want the four seams of the baseball to be spinning in a rotation as if your were throwing a curve ball toward third base (for a rhp). That spin is what carries the ball down and arm side. If the baseball gets off this axis at any time you will sacrifice the movement of this pitch. It could act like a slider or just be a lazy spinner. Make sure you throw the pitch with the 4 seams spinning straight down and to the arm side. That's how you throw the gyroball.
