How To Grip and Throw a Split Finger

How To Grip and Throw a Split Finger

How To Throw a Split Finger - The split finger is one of the toughest pitches to hit. It is also one of the toughest pitches to throw for strikes. With that being said I believe everyone should try to throw this pitch. I don't think it causes as many arm problems as people say.

You can throw this pitch as effortlessly as you want but it really bites and breaks when you throw it hard. With that being said, you could throw this pitch in different counts, different ways. Maybe early in the count you can flip an easy one in there for a strike to get ahead. Late in the count when you are ahead you can throw a nasty split finger as a strike out pitch.

To grip the split finger spread your pointer and middle finger as far as they can go. Jam the baseball back into the web of these fingers. I like throwing the split without touching any laces. This will create more of a tumbling pitch. Put the thumb on the bottom of the baseball. It will probably be closer to your pointer finger unless you have big hands. The pointer and middle finger will be split straight down the middle of the baseball.

When throwing the split finger, throw it just like a fastball. Do nothing different. The biggest part of mastering this pitch is finding a consistent release point. Other than that, just let the baseball do the work.

A good split finger will tumble hard and fast. It will have a late knuckle ball movement but be much harder and sharper. Some hitters call the split finger the best pitch in baseball.
