Hitting Drills - The Shadow Drill
Shadow Drill
The shadow drill is a great drill to help eliminate head movement within the swing. We want our head to be still during a swing because if our head is moving, then our eyes are moving. This makes hitting even more hard than it already is.
The shadow drill will show us how much our head is moving by measuring where your head starts and finishes in your swing. How do you do this? It’s easy.
Find an area where the sun is shining down. The best time of day to do this would be around 4 or 5 when the sun is not directly above you. Find an angle where you shawdow is about the same size as you are and is laying flat on the ground.
Next you want to get into your stance. Once you are comfortable, have someone place a marker on your shadow head. It could be a golf ball or anything like that. Take your normal swing and see where your head is after the swing. A good idea would be to video tape the shadow so you can see what it is doing throughout the swing (or just video tape yourself).
Sometimes we start and finish at the same points but our head moves in the middle. Your head will move a little bit. You don’t want to be practicing like a robot, but for the most part it will be still.
Be comfortable and fluent, don’t be a robot, but do keep your head still to see the ball better.
