Catching Drill - The Cross Drill
The Cross Drill The Cross Drill is done by drawing two lines in the catcher's box where you set up. One line going left to right and another pointing towards second base and the backstop. This drill can be done with or without a baseball. I prefer having someone toss the baseball into you so you can work on the transfer at the same time as your footwork. The cross drill (refering to the lines you drew) is to help you get the correct footwork for when you are throwing down to second base. What you do is start with your feet on the line that is parallel with the pitcher's rubber. Your left foot should actually be just a little more forward than your right. Once you catch the baseball some coaches teach a step through with your right foot first to get momentum to throw. This will take too much time and you will never throw anyone out. You must use a quick hop into position. At the same time the baseball should be removed from your glove and brought up straight to the throwing position. When you do this hop your feet should land directly on the line that is pointed towards second. If you are falling over or unbalanced you need to work on staying on the balls of your feets or not spinning too much when you hop. This catching drill can also be done inside by putting tape on the ground as opposed to drawing a line.
