A Hitter's Routine in the Batter's Box

A Hitter's Routine in the Batter's Box

Every hitter should have a routine that they do when they get into the batter's box. It should be something that calms them down and gets them focused to hit. Although I am a firm believer in this, I also believe that the amount of movement should be minimized as the pitcher is starting his wind up. This gives us the best chance at seeing the baseball. Up to that point, I think a hitter can do whatever makes them comfortable. If it's a Ichiro squat and point, a Pujols robot set up, or anything in between, you must do what makes you comfortable and ready to hit. That is the whole purpose of a routine in the batter's box. Just like with all routines, you should find one that works and stick with it. Baseball players are very supersticious so you will see guys changing their stances alot. Again, I believe the routine should get you to a good set up position before the pitcher starts his delivery. Once you find one that gets you there and produces some success, I think you should stick with it until it stops working for you. I would even suggest trying to work on some hitting mechanics (link) before you try changing your routine because changing your routine could mess up your whole mechanics, while fine tuning your mechanics won't mess up your routine (or at least it won't matter as much).
