Slowing Down The Game
Slowing Down The Game
You may hear some coaches say "slow the game down" or "the game will get slower, the longer you play". But, what does that mean?
To slow the game down means to be relaxed and not rushed while the ball is in play. Experience is probably the most common way for players to slow the game down, but there are some other factors that can make the game slower.
Knowing what to do when a ball is hit to you is one way to slow the game down. Knowing before hand what you are supposed to do in certain situations will dramatically slow the game down because there will be no pressure in split second decision making. You will already know what you are doing with the baseball.
Another way to slow the game down is to take a deep breath just before the pitcher delivers the ball. This will help you calm any nerves that are making your anxious or not so sure footed. Taking a deep breath will help you stay under control as you are making the play, calm your nerves, and ultimately help in slowing the game down.
The earlier you learn how to slow the game down, the better off you will be. All the plays in the game will then become the same speed as the drills that you do to practice your position. Slowing the game down doesn't pertain soley to fielders. You can slow the game down when you are pitching, hitting, catching, or anything else you are doing on the field.
Just remember, know what you are doing and take a deep breath. The more you practice slowing the game down, the more experience you will have, which in turn will slow the game down even more.
