Roll Out Abs for Baseball

Roll Out Abs for Baseball

Roll out abs are great for baseball players. Almost as great as rotational ab exercises. The reason that roll out abs are so great for baseball players, is because they keep the abs strong while keeping the flexibility of the baseball player.

See, when baseball players train using crunches or other sit up type ab exercises, the ab muscles become short and tight. The baseball players back usually will round if that is the only type of ab exercises they are doing. Just as if a baseball player were to lift a lot of chest, the shoulders would round forward, this is true for crunches.

What roll out abs do for baseball players is let them be strong in situations they will need to be strong in. Think of diving plays in the field. Landing and being able to get up quickly and throw the baseball. Jumping up to catch balls, and even hitting and throwing would benefit from doing roll out abs.

While I agree that rotational ab exercises are the best for baseball players, I definitely believe that roll out abs are a close second. With that being said, mixing the two together, along with some stability ab exercises, would be a great ab workout for any baseball player.

Here are some of my favorite roll out ab exercises and equipment that you can use:

Roll out with hands – With roller in hands, start on knees (or feet if advanced) and slowly roll out until your upper body is almost touching the floor. Slowly roll back up.

Roll out with feet – With roller held by feet, either start on elbows or hands and slowly roll legs up into the chest. Slowly roll back out fully extending your legs.

Roll out side to side – With roller in hands, roll out at a 45 degree angle to where a normal roll out would be. This will work the sides of the abs. Make sure you do both sides.

For these roll out ab exercises you can use a number of training devices. The most obvious one is the roll out wheel they sell specifically for these roll out ab workouts. Click here to get one or Click here to see how to make your own

You can also use a barbell with weights on each side of it if you don’t like either of these suggestions. Another piece of equipment for the roll out abs is the physioball. While you can’t really make a homemade physioball, they are pretty cheap and I really like the extra stability work that you get from training roll out abs with the physioball. One of my favorite tools for training roll out abs is the furniture sliders. They are like $13 for a 4 pack and have many uses besides just roll out abs. Of course they are great for moving furniture, but you can also do a bunch of other exercises using these sliders. All in all, roll out abs are great for baseball players. You will be surprised at how much stronger you will feel than if you just did crunches. Incorporate some of these roll out ab exercises into your next workout and let me know how it goes.
